About North star candle co.
Greetings! I’m Jessamy, the sole creator behind North Star Candle Co.
Well, me and the thousands of honeybees who made the wax I use.
I’ve been a beekeeper on-and-off over the years and have a deep respect for the sacred role bees play in our lives. As pollinators for 80% of all flowering plants, honeybees are crucial to our food supply and to the survival of the planet. Human-managed hives, when well-cared for, can actually help support the honey bee population, which has been in serious decline due to pesticides and climate change. These days I procure 100% pure certified organic wax from other beekeepers.
Honey bees make wax from the honey they eat, which forms wax flakes that are then extruded through glands on their abdomen, chewed with saliva and used to build the incredible architecture of honeycombed hives. Wax is collected, filtered, and then melted to make candles. I don’t use any scents or additives, as only pure beeswax candles can actually purify the air when burned, by releasing negative ions which bind with allergens and pollutants and neutralize them. Most soy-which is one of the most heavily sprayed crops, and all paraffin waxes- which are petroleum based, release toxic chemicals or pesticides when burned. Synthetic scents (and even essential oils) change composition when burned, releasing harmful toxins that shouldn’t be inhaled.
The soft, warm, natural glow of candlelight has been found to switch the brain into an alpha wave state, during which we become calmer, more introspective and creative. Then, especially via candle gazing meditation (simply resting the eyes on a candle flame), the brain shifts into a theta wave state, a deeper and more intuitive level of being.
No wonder we’re so drawn to candles! Whether for special occasions, ceremonies and rituals, or simply to ease the transition between waking in the morning and winding down in the evenings, candle light can play an important role in reconnecting to ourselves, one another, and the sacred side of life.
Every candle I make is hand dipped or hand poured with care and attention to detail, and with a meditative creative energy of peace surrounding each one. This is not a hobby, but a passion, and also my livelihood and way of life. The more I learn about bees, the more connected I feel to the everyday magic that surrounds us in the natural world.
Thank you for supporting your local beeswax candlemaker and thank you to the bees!
